How to Grow Wildflowers
Planting Schedule:
For best results, sow wildflower seeds from two weeks before to eight weeks after your area's last average frost date. Early sowing, even with the chance of light frost, can enhance germination rates.
Fall sowing is also an option, though be mindful that some seeds may be lost to the elements, birds, and wildlife. Sowing annuals in early spring maximizes their vibrant display.
Seed Starting:
- Choosing the Right Spot: An empty plot could indicate soil issues such as poor fertility, inadequate drainage, or the need for texture improvement. Areas under dense foliage like cedar trees are generally unsuitable for wildflowers.
- Site Prep: Clear existing vegetation to reduce competition and aerate the soil through tilling, raking, or scraping. Wildflower seeds struggle to establish in lawns due to thatch barriers.
- Sowing Seeds: Hand scatter seeds in small plots or use a mechanical spreader for larger areas. Mix wildflower seeds with 1-2 parts clean, dry sand (avoid salty beach sand) for even distribution. Reserve a portion of seeds for patching gaps later. Seeds need soil contact but should not be buried more than 2-3 times their thickness.
Growing:
Ensure the soil remains moist to support seed germination and seedling growth. Regular weed control is crucial. After establishment, these mixes generally thrive without extra watering, except during prolonged dry spells.
Re-seeding can rejuvenate your wildflower area with time. Late summer seed heads from these plants can be collected and sown the following season for a continuous display of natural beauty.
