West Coast Seeds, Swiss Chard Seeds - Additional Information

How to Grow Swiss Chard

Planting Schedule:
Begin sowing Swiss Chard seeds from early spring until mid-summer for a continual harvest. This hardy green can extend its bounty into regions with mild winters the following spring. Aim for a soil temperature between 10-30°C (50-85°F) for optimal germination, typically within 7-14 days.

Seed Starting:
Plant seeds at a depth of 1cm (½ inch), spacing them 10-30cm (4-12 inches) apart in rows that are 45cm (18 inches) apart to allow for ample growth.

Growing:
Swiss Chard thrives in a pH range of 6.0-6.5 and prefers loose, deep soil enriched with organic matter. Ensure consistent moisture throughout the growth period, particularly as plants mature.

While full sun is ideal, Swiss Chard tolerates partial shade during hot summer. Boost growth with a liquid fertilizer or compost tea applied twice over the summer.

Harvesting:
Sow seeds more densely for a tender salad mix and harvest young leaves. Harvest mature leaves by cutting the large outer stalks first, ensuring continuous growth and a longer harvesting season.

Swiss Chard Pests & Diseases

Leaf Miners:
Leaf miners burrow into leaves, creating winding trails that damage plant tissue.

Use floating row covers to prevent flies from laying eggs on the leaves. Keep the garden area clean.

Remove and destroy affected leaves to reduce the population. Trap crops, like radishes, can divert leaf miners from your chard.

Downy Mildew
This fungal disease appears as yellow spots on the upper leaf surface and a white, fluffy growth underneath.

Ensure good air circulation around plants and water in the morning so foliage can dry. Choose resistant varieties.

Apply organic fungicides containing copper or potassium bicarbonate at the first sign of infection.

Cercospora Leaf Spot:
Cercospora leaf spot is characterized by small, circular spots that grow and turn brown or gray, often with a reddish halo.

Space plants properly and avoid overhead watering. Rotate crops.

Remove affected leaves to prevent spread. Organic or chemical fungicides may be necessary in severe cases, following label instructions.
