How to Grow Sunflowers
Planting Schedule:
Begin your sunflower journey directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed to witness their rapid ascent to the sky. While starting indoors is an option, it often doesn't significantly expedite blooming and may lead to weaker, less stable plants. Aim for a soil temperature of 21-30°C (70-85°F) for optimal germination, expecting sprouts within 10-14 days.
Seed Starting:
Plant seeds shallowly, at a depth of 5mm-1cm (¼-½ inch). Space considerations vary significantly by variety: compact dwarfs require only 15cm (6 inches) between them, whereas towering giants demand as much as 1m (3 feet) to spread their roots and reach their full majestic height.
Growing:
For the grandest blooms and the sturdiest of stems, enrich your garden's soil with ample organic matter and a hearty helping of balanced organic fertilizer across every 3m (10 feet) of your sunflower row. Regular watering is crucial, especially as your sunflowers reach for the sun.
At the 30cm (12-inch) growth milestone, add a nutrient boost: dissolve 5ml (1 teaspoon) of borax in 350ml (12 fluid ounces) of water and gently apply this mix along 5m (15 feet) of row to foster larger seeds and flower heads. Use boron specifically for your sunflowers to avoid harm to other garden residents.
Monitor the back of the flower heads; a yellow hue signals readiness for harvest. Sunflowers, with their heads turned skyward, offer a visual feast and a bounty of seeds, embodying the essence of summer's abundance.
