How to Grow Bush Beans
Planting Schedule:
For best results, sow bush bean seeds directly in the garden from mid to late spring, choosing a warm and dry period for planting. Soil temperature is crucial; ensure it's warm enough (21-30°C or 70-90°F) to prevent seed rot. Expect germination within 8-16 days, varying by soil conditions.
Seed Starting:
Place seeds 2-5cm (1-2 inches) deep into the soil, spacing them 5-8cm (2-3 inches) apart, with rows 45-60cm (18-24 inches) apart. After germination, thin seedlings to at least 15cm (6 inches) apart for optimal growth.
If outdoor conditions are overly wet, consider planting beans indoors and transplanting them later. For continuous yields, stagger your planting every three weeks.
Growing:
Aim for a soil pH of 6.0-6.5. Bush beans thrive in well-drained, warm soil under full sun. Apply 1 cup of organic fertilizer for every 3m (10 feet) row. Raised beds can enhance soil drainage and warmth.
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can impede pod formation. If flowering occurs without pod setting, a zinc deficiency might be present. A kelp-based fertilizer spray can address this issue.
Harvesting:
Frequent harvesting encourages continuous production; once pods mature, flowering may cease. Younger beans are more tender. Regular picking ensures a steady supply of delicious, tender bush beans for your table.
Bush Bean Pests & Diseases
Aphids:
These tiny, sap-sucking pests can cause significant damage but are manageable with prompt action.
Encourage beneficial insects that prey on aphids by planting companion plants like marigolds or herbs that attract them.
A strong jet of water early in the day can dislodge aphids from plants. Inspect for natural predators like ladybeetles and lacewings, which can help control aphid populations. If infestation persists, consider using insecticidal soap or neem oil and applying it according to the product's instructions.
Spider Mites (Two-spotted): Spider mites are tiny pests that can cause damage by sucking sap from the leaves, leading to discoloration and leaf drop.
Keep plants well-watered, as spider mites thrive in dry conditions. Regularly misting plants can help deter them.
Similar to aphids, a hard stream of water early in the morning can remove mites from the plants. Apply insecticidal soap or neem oil for severe infestations, especially to the undersides of leaves where mites congregate.
Leafhoppers:
Leafhoppers can stunt bush bean growth by feeding on sap and potentially spreading viruses.
Use floating row covers to protect plants from leafhoppers. Remove weeds and garden debris where leafhoppers might breed or take shelter.
Cultural control options for leafhoppers are limited. In the case of severe infestations, consider organic pesticides approved for use in vegetable gardens, carefully following the label directions. Monitor the plants closely for signs of damage and apply treatments as necessary.
