How to Grow Beets
Planting Schedule:
Begin sowing beet seeds directly in the garden four weeks after the last frost until mid-summer. Avoid sowing in cold soil as it inhibits root development. Seeds typically sprout within 5-12 days in soil temperatures between 10-26°C (50-80°F).
Seed Starting:
Place seeds about 1cm (½”) deep and 5-10cm (2-4") apart in rows that are 30-45cm (12-18") apart, ensuring enough space for growth.
Growth Conditions:
Beets thrive in soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. To achieve uniform beet sizes, thin the seedlings to 7-15cm (3-6") apart when they reach 5cm (2") in height. The thinned seedlings are edible, so don't let them go to waste. Spacing and variety will influence the size of the beetroots.
Harvesting:
Beets can be harvested at any size, but pull them when they reach their full size for optimal taste. Remember, the greens are also edible and nutritious. Beets can be stored in the ground or preserved in moist peat or sand just above freezing for later use.
Beets Pests & Diseases
Black Cankers:
If you notice black cankers on your beetroots, this could indicate a boron deficiency in the soil. To address this, dissolve 1 tablespoon of borax in 4 litres (approximately 8½ US pints) of water and evenly distribute it over a 9 square meter (around 100 square feet). It's crucial not to exceed this application rate to avoid potential harm.
Cercospora Leaf Spot:
Prevention is vital for circular lesions with a purple outline on beet leaves, known as Cercospora leaf spot. Implementing strict crop rotation and maintaining clean garden practices can help avoid this issue.
Leaf Miner Maggots:
Leaf miner maggots target beet leaves, creating grey, blister-like tunnels. A simple solution is to press on these tunnels to eliminate the larvae inside. To prevent future infestations, apply floating row covers right after planting. This barrier prevents the leaf miner fly from laying eggs on the plants, safeguarding your beets from damage.
