How to Grow Turnips

Planting Schedule:
Kickstart your turnip planting journey shortly after the last frost has passed, continuing through summer and into autumn. In regions with mild winters, planting can extend into October. Aim for a soil temperature of 18-21°C (66-70°F) for optimal germination, expecting sprouts within 7-14 days.

Seed Starting:
Plant seeds at a depth of 5mm-1cm (¼-½ inch) in rows 60cm (24 inches) apart. As the seedlings emerge, thin them to stand 15-20cm (6-8 inches) apart within each row, ensuring each plant has enough space to grow.

Growing:
For thriving turnips, maintain a soil pH between 6.0-6.8. Prepare your beds with humus-rich, deeply turned soil, incorporating plenty of well-rotted compost or manure to a depth of 20cm (8 inches). For each 3m (10 feet) row, work in 1 cup of complete organic fertilizer to nourish your plants.

The key to bountiful turnips is consistent planting: sow short rows every 2-3 weeks, promptly thin seedlings, maintain moisture, and keep the cycle going for continuous harvests.

Harvesting:
Enjoy harvesting both the nutrient-rich greens and flavorful roots throughout the summer. Pay attention to the immature seed pods, which are also a delicious treat. Regular picking encourages new growth, allowing you to savour the fresh taste of turnips throughout the growing season.

Turnips Pests & Diseases

Clubroot:
Clubroot is a soil-borne fungal disease that causes swelling and distortion of the roots, severely impacting plant health.

Rotate crops annually to avoid soil contamination. Lime the soil to maintain a pH above 7.0, as the disease thrives in acidic conditions.

If clubroot is detected, remove and destroy affected plants immediately. Solarize the soil in summer to kill remaining spores, or consider planting resistant turnip varieties.

Root Maggots:
Root maggots can damage turnip roots, leading to rot and plant death.

Use row covers to prevent flies from laying eggs near plants. Practice crop rotation and keep the area weed-free to reduce habitat for these pests.

Apply beneficial nematodes to the soil to target maggot larvae. Remove and destroy infested plants to prevent spread.

Powdery Mildew:
This fungal disease appears as white powdery spots on leaves, reducing photosynthesis and plant vigour.

Ensure good air circulation around plants and water at the base to keep foliage dry.

Apply sulphur-based fungicides or a preventative spray of milk and water (1 part milk to 9 parts water).

Purple Top White Globe Turnip Seeds

Delve into your garden's rich heritage with our Purple Top White Globe Turnip Seeds, an esteemed heirloom variety cherished since 1880. These seeds produce smooth, almost perfectly round roots adorned with a striking bright purple top that transitions into a creamy white at the soil line.

These turnips are celebrated for their mild, sweet flavour. They grow up to 13cm (5 inches) in diameter but are most appetizing when harvested at a tender 5-8cm (2-3 inches).
