West Coast Seeds, Rutabaga Seeds - Additional Information
Planting Schedule:
For best results, plant rutabaga seeds around the summer solstice three weeks before or after. Aim for a soil temperature of 18-21°C (65-70°F) for ideal germination, typically within 7-15 days.
Seed Starting:
Plant seeds at a depth of 5mm-1cm (¼-½") in rows that are 60-75cm (24-30 inches) apart. As the seedlings grow, thin them to 15-20cm (6-8 inches) between each plant within the rows to ensure ample space for development.
Growing:
Maintain a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.8 for optimal growth. Rutabagas flourish in rich, loamy soil enriched with composted manure. Incorporate 1 cup of complete organic fertilizer for every 3m (10 feet) row and lime the beds several weeks before planting. These root vegetables benefit from adding organic matter and require regular watering during dry spells to support their growth.
Harvesting:
Harvest rutabagas when they have grown larger than tennis balls, typically ready for pulling from the ground. For storage, place them in paper bags in a cool, dry area or bury them in dry sand or peat moss to retain moisture and extend freshness. If preferred, rutabagas can remain in the ground until needed in the fall.
Rutabaga Pests & Diseases
Root Maggots:
Root maggots can cause significant damage to rutabagas by feeding on their roots, leading to weakened or dead plants.
Crop rotation is crucial to preventing the buildup of root maggot populations in the soil. Immediately after planting, floating row covers can protect young plants from egg-laying flies.
Once infestation is detected, beneficial nematodes should be applied to the soil to target maggot larvae. In severe cases, removing and destroying affected plants may be necessary to prevent further spread.
Flea Beetles:
Flea beetles chew small holes in the leaves of rutabagas, which can severely affect plant health and yield.
Implement floating row covers to shield plants from these pests. Healthy soil cultivation and good crop rotation also reduce flea beetle outbreaks.
Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled around the base of plants to deter flea beetles. For active infestations, apply pyrethrin-based insecticides or neem oil, following application instructions carefully for safe use around edible crops.
