How to Grow Runner Beans

Planting Schedule:
For the best results, plant runner bean seeds directly in the garden from late spring to early summer, and they choose a period when the soil is warm and dry.

Seeds require a soil temperature of 21-32°C (70-90°F) to avoid rot, which is especially important for untreated seeds.


Seed Starting:
Whether starting seeds indoors or directly in the garden, space them 7-10cm (3-4 inches) apart at a depth of 3.5cm (1½ inches) near a sturdy support structure.

Runner beans are climbers and will twine around almost anything – rough poles, lumber, re-bar, or trellises standing 2-2.5m (6-8 feet) tall are ideal. Expect germination in 8-16 days, depending on conditions.


Growing:
Aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5 in a spot that receives full sun. Warm, well-drained soil optimizes growth. Enrich the soil with 1 cup of organic fertilizer per 3m (10 feet) row. Be cautious with nitrogen-heavy fertilizers, as they can hinder pod formation.

If your plant's flower but don't produce pods, consider a kelp-based fertilizer to address potential zinc deficiencies


Harvesting:
Harvest beans when they are plump and feel full. Cooking is essential, as raw runner beans contain lectin, a toxin eliminated through cooking. Beans can be dried for preservation or cooked shortly after harvesting to enjoy their fresh flavour.

Runner Bean Pests & Diseases

Spider Mites:
These tiny pests can cause significant damage by sucking sap from the leaves, leading to discoloration and leaf drop.

Plants need adequate moisture, and spider mites thrive in dry conditions. Regularly mist plants in dry weather.

Remove heavily infested leaves. Apply a miticide or neem oil, ensuring thorough coverage, especially on the undersides of leaves.


Black Bean Aphid:
Also known as blackflies, these aphids cluster on new growth and under leaves, sucking sap and weakening plants.

Introduce beneficial insects that prey on black bean aphids. Use reflective mulches to deter them.

Rinse plants with a strong stream of water to dislodge aphids. Apply insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.


Bean Rust:
This fungal disease presents as orange or brown pustules on leaves and stems, weakening plants.

Ensure good air circulation around plants and practice crop rotation. Remove and destroy infected plant debris.

Apply an approved fungicide for edible plants at the first sign of infection. Remove and destroy severely affected plants to prevent spread.
