How to Grow Rosemary
Planting Schedule:
Begin your rosemary journey indoors from late winter through early spring. For those in milder climates, direct sowing in late spring is possible, but for guaranteed results, indoor starts are advisable. Ensure optimal growth using bottom heat to keep soil temperatures between 27-32°C (80-90°F).
Seed Starting:
Due to rosemary's typically low germination rate, sowing extra seeds is recommended. Cover seeds lightly with sterilized seed starting mix and place over bottom heat. Post-germination, the young plants are vulnerable to damping off; thus, minimal watering, ample light, and good airflow are essential.
During their first winter, maintain individual plants in separate pots and protect them from extreme cold. The following spring, transplant them into your garden at a distance of 60-90cm (24-36 inches) apart.
Growing:
For container-grown rosemary, apply a liquid fertilizer monthly and ensure the plants are adequately watered during hot spells.
When cold weather sets in, mulch around the base of each plant to offer insulation against freezing temperatures, which is crucial for preventing root damage and subsequent plant death.
Harvesting:
To harvest leaves, pull them off by hand. For stems or branches, particularly when intending to dry them, use a clean, sharp knife, avoiding scissors, which may damage the plant tissues at the cut. This method ensures the integrity of the rosemary for culinary use or storage.
Rosemary Pests & Diseases
Spider Mites:
These tiny pests can cause rosemary leaves to become discoloured and speckled.
Ensure good air circulation around your plants and avoid overwatering, as spider mites thrive in dusty, dry conditions.
Rinse plants with a strong water jet to dislodge the mites. For more severe infestations, apply insecticidal soap or neem oil, focusing on the undersides of leaves where mites congregate.
Powdery Mildew:
This fungal disease appears as a white powdery substance on the leaves and stems of rosemary.
Space plants adequately to improve airflow and reduce humidity around the foliage. Water plants at the base to avoid wet leaves.
Prune affected areas to remove infected parts and improve air circulation. As a preventative spray, apply a mixture of baking soda, water, and a few drops of liquid soap.
Botrytis Blight (Gray Mold):
This mould can cause parts of the rosemary plant to rot, especially in humid conditions.
Ensure plants are not overcrowded, and prune any dead or dying foliage regularly.
Remove and destroy any infected plant parts immediately. Improve air circulation around the plants, and consider applying a fungicide if the problem persists.
