How to Grow Snapdragons
Planting Schedule:
Begin your snapdragon seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the anticipated frost-free date. Aim for a soil temperature around 12°C (55°F) to encourage germination, typically occurring within 10-21 days.
While you can direct sow, starting seeds indoors tends to yield more predictable results.
Seed Starting:
Disperse seeds lightly atop a sterilized seed starting mix, ensuring they remain on the surface for the light they need to germinate. Snapdragons are somewhat susceptible to damping off, so enhance air circulation, top with vermiculite, and water from beneath to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Once the threat of frost has passed and daytime temperatures regularly exceed 10°C (50°F), transplant your seedlings outdoors, spacing them 30cm (12 inches) apart to allow for ample growth.
Growing:
Snapdragons flourish in rich soil with a neutral pH and a sunny spot. Pinch the top once the plants have six leaves to encourage fuller, bushier plants. A minimal feeding regimen applied twice prior to blooming supports healthy development.
Regular deadheading promotes continuous flowering; should blooms diminish, don't hesitate to cut plants back significantly. A subsequent generous watering and feeding will rejuvenate your snapdragons for another round of vibrant display.
