How to Grow Poppies

Planting Schedule:
Annual poppies should be sown outdoors early in the spring while there's still a chance of frost. Autumn sowing yields the best results in warmer climates (Zones 8-10).

Poppies resist transplanting; if indoor starting is necessary, opt for peat or coir pots and expect germination in 20-30 days at a soil temperature of 12°C (55°F).

Seed Starting:
For best results, either scatter seeds directly on the surface of well-prepared soil without covering them or lightly cover them with soil. For

California poppies are sown with seeds about 5mm (¼") deep, and seedlings or thinned plants are spaced 20-25cm (8-10") apart to allow ample growth.

Growing:
Poppies flourish with minimal intervention, often self-sowing in unexpected places without becoming invasive. Monitor their growth and allow them to naturalize, removing only the unwanted plants. Maintain moderate watering during dry spells and refrain from fertilizing to encourage natural growth.

For vibrant displays and healthier plants, thin them to prevent overcrowding, which is especially important for Papaver somniferum to produce large seed heads. Plant these in full sun and well-drained soil, and keep the area weed-free for optimal growth. Note that cooler, damp conditions or overcrowding may result in smaller seed heads.

California poppies tend to self-sow and require regular deadheading if self-seeding is not desired.
