How to Grow Pansies & Violas
Planting Schedule:Begin your pansy and viola journey by planting seeds indoors about 10-12 weeks before you move them outside. A vibrant display following the last frost of spring requires up to three months of indoor nurturing.
Alternatively, you can sow directly outdoors from summer through to early fall. In Zones 7-9, initiate seeding from mid to late June if you aim for winter blooms.
Seed Starting:
Though small, pansy and viola seeds should be planted at a depth of 5mm (¼"). Maintain soil temperatures between 18-25°C (65-75°F) and ensure complete darkness until germination occurs around 14 days later, then shift to bright light to foster stout growth. Space your plants 15-23cm (6-9") apart when transplanting to the garden.
Growing:
Post-germination, both pansies and violas require minimal care. Early on, apply fertilizer one or two times and mulch around the plants to keep the roots cool as temperatures climb. Regular deadheading is essential to prevent unwanted self-sowing, especially for Johnny Jump-Ups.
