How to Grow Mint
Planting Schedule:
Plant mint seeds indoors in early spring or directly outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Mint thrives in cooler temperatures but can be grown year-round in milder climates.
Seed Starting:
Lightly press the seeds into a moist, well-draining seed starting mix, covering them with a thin layer of soil. Mint prefers indirect light for germination, so seedling trays should be placed in a bright but not directly sunlit location. Keep the soil consistently moist.
Growing:
Mint enjoys a partially shaded to full sun location, depending on the intensity of your climate. It flourishes in rich, moist soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
When seedlings are established and frost risk has passed, transplant them outdoors, spacing plants about 30-45cm (12-18 inches) apart. Mint spreads quickly; consider planting in containers or using barriers to control its growth.
Pinch off the tips of the stems to encourage bushier growth. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Regular harvesting of the leaves will also promote new growth.
Harvesting:
Harvest mint leaves as needed. Young leaves have the best flavour. Cut stems early in the morning when the oils are strongest for the most intense flavour.
Mint can be dried, frozen, or used fresh to add a refreshing touch to a wide range of dishes and beverages.
Mint Pests & Diseases
Spider Mites:
Spider mites are tiny pests that can cause lemongrass leaves to turn yellow and drop.
Keep the area around plants clean and weed-free. Periodically, use a strong spray of water to knock mites off plants.
Apply insecticidal soap or neem oil to infested plants. Ensure thorough coverage of the undersides of leaves where mites reside.
Rust:
Rust appears as small, orange or brown pustules on the undersides of leaves, potentially reducing plant vigour.
Ensure good air circulation around plants and avoid overhead watering.
Prune affected leaves and dispose of them properly. Apply a fungicide registered for edible plants, following label directions carefully.
Cutworms:
Cutworms are caterpillars that can cut through the stems of young mint plants at the soil line.
To protect against cutworms, place a collar around the base of seedlings made from cardboard or plastic cups with the bottom removed.
Manually remove and destroy cutworms found in the soil around your plants. Encourage natural predators, such as birds, that feed on these pests.
Spearmint Seeds
Spearmint, known for its subtly sweet flavour and fruity undertones, offers a gentler taste experience compared to peppermint, making it a favourite for culinary use. This mint variety is easy to cultivate and quick to establish itself, spreading enthusiastically in moist environments. To keep its growth in check, consider planting it in containers where it can thrive without overtaking your garden.
The versatile leaves of Spearmint dry beautifully, retaining their flavour for teas and enhancing beverages like the classic mojito with a fresh, aromatic twist. In about ninety days, the plants will bloom with white to lilac flowers that are a treat for the eyes and palate and a beacon for bees.
As a perennial plant, Spearmint is hardy, ensuring a resilient and lasting addition to your herb garden. Whether dried for a soothing tea or plucked fresh to invigorate your drinks and dishes, Spearmint Seeds promises flavour and fragrance.
