West Coast Seeds, Dill Seeds - Additional Information

How to Grow Dill

Planting Schedule:
Direct sow dill seeds from late spring to summer for seamless integration into your garden. This time period also aligns with cucumber transplantation for those interested in pickling.

Dill is sensitive to transplanting and flourishes when sown directly into the garden. Plant seeds every 2-3 weeks to ensure a steady supply of dill. Seeds typically sprout within 10-21 days in soil temperatures between 15-21°C (60-70°F).

Seed Starting:
Dill seeds require some light for optimal germination. Plant them lightly, no deeper than 5mm (¼”) in rows spaced 45cm (18") apart.

Once the dill is germinated, thin the seedlings to at least 15cm (6") apart to give each plant ample space to grow.

Growing:
Aim for a soil pH between 5.0 and 7.0, and position your dill in full sun. Moderately rich soil is ideal for its growth. Regular watering and feeding are crucial, but as your dill reaches a height of 60cm (24"), reduce overhead watering to prevent mildew on the foliage.

Harvesting:
Start collecting leaves when your dill plants are about 15cm (6") tall. Seed heads will form approximately 12 weeks after sprouting. Harvest the heads when the first seeds darken, then hang them upside down to dry, allowing seeds to collect in trays or paper bags below.

To preserve the fresh flavour of dill leaves, consider freezing them in ice cube trays with water, ensuring you have access to their vibrant taste throughout the winter.

Dill Pests & Diseases

Aphids:
These small, sap-sucking insects can cause basil leaves to curl and become distorted.

Encourage beneficial insects, like ladybugs, that prey on aphids. A strong spray of water from a hose can help dislodge aphid populations.

Insecticidal soaps or neem oil can be effective treatments if applied promptly at the first sign of infestation. Apply according to product instructions, usually in the cooler part of the day.

Carrot Rust Fly:
The larvae of the carrot rust fly can damage the roots of dill plants.

Use floating row covers to prevent flies from laying eggs near plants. Practice crop rotation and keep the area weed-free to reduce habitat for them

There is no effective cure once larvae have infested the roots. Infected plants should be removed to prevent the spread.

Downy Mildew:
Downy mildew presents as yellow spots on the upper surfaces of leaves and a fluffy, white fungal growth on the underside.

Ensure good air circulation around plants and water at the base to avoid wetting the foliage—plant dill in a sunny location.

Remove and destroy infected leaves or plants to prevent spread. For severe cases, fungicides may be necessary. Choose organic options approved for edible plants.
