How to Grow Cosmos
Planting Schedule:
Start your Cosmos garden by directly sowing seeds after the threat of frost has passed, ensuring a vibrant display all season long. For an even longer period of blooms, consider multiple sowings.
If you're eager for an early start, sow seeds indoors in late winter and prepare for transplanting once the threat of frost is gone and daytime temperatures consistently exceed 10°C (50°F). Expect germination within 3-10 days in optimal 21-25°C (70-75°F).
Seed Starting:
Place seeds below the surface, barely covering them with a thin layer of soil — only a few millimetres (1/8 inch) deep.
Once germinated, ensure seedlings are spaced 20-25cm (8-10 inches) apart, providing ample room for growth.
Growing:
Cosmos varieties have a penchant for reaching skyward, often stretching tall. In gardens exposed to wind or lacking shelter, staking or using trellis netting laid horizontally across the bed can offer support. This setup allows stems to weave through the netting as they grow, minimizing damage and keeping your Cosmos upright.
Regularly deadheading spent flowers and cutting blooms for indoor arrangements will beautify your home and encourage continuous flowering throughout the season.
