How to Grow Cauliflower

Planting:
Start seeds indoors four weeks before the last frost extends into late spring. Ready for transplanting in 5-6 weeks or direct seed once the temperature consistently stays above 10°C (50°F). For overwintering varieties, start in July and transplant by mid-August in areas with mild winters. Seeds typically sprout within 7-10 days in soil temperatures of 10-30°C (50-85°F).


Seed Starting:
Plant 3-4 seeds 5mm (¼") deep at each planting site. Thin out to leave only the strongest seedling per spot. Space out transplants 45-60cm (18-24") apart in rows that are 60-90cm (24-36") apart.


Growing:
The best growth medium is humus-rich soil enhanced with composted manure. Incorporate ½ cup of complete organic fertilizer under each plant. Continuous, steady growth is crucial for forming a sizeable plant and curd. Apply additional fertilizer if growth lags, and ensure the soil remains moist with regular watering.

Protect developing curds from direct sunlight by tying leaves together or covering them with newspaper, a process known as "blanching," to maintain curd whiteness. Direct sowing requires adding 20-25 days to the expected maturity.


Harvesting:
Monitor curd development closely; harvest when florets begin to separate but are still tightly clustered, ensuring maximum size and optimal flavour.

Diseases & Pests

Slugs & Snails:
Deter these pests by surrounding your plants with a barrier of crushed eggshells.


Cabbage Aphids:
Blast aphids off your plants with a strong jet of water in the morning to prevent infestation.


Cabbage Root Maggot:
Look out for white larvae that feed on the roots, leading to wilting and potentially the plant's demise. Vigilance is key.


Flea Beetles:
Protect young plants from flea beetles by using row covers right after planting. Remove covers as summer heats up and regularly manage weeds to reduce habitat for these pests.


Cabbageworms:
Regularly inspect plants and manually remove cabbageworms. For smaller areas, row covers can offer adequate protection against early damage.
