How to Grow Calendula
Planting Schedule:
Begin sowing Calendula directly in the garden in early spring, when a light frost is still possible, and continue planting every two to three weeks up to early summer to ensure a vibrant fall display.
While direct sowing is recommended for the best results, Calendula can also be started indoors in late winter. For indoor starts, keep seeds in darkness at a soil temperature of 21°C (70°F) until they germinate within 6-14 days.
Seed Starting:
Plant seeds approximately 5mm (¼ inch) deep in the soil. Space your Calendula plants 15-45cm (6-18 inches) apart for ample growth and air circulation.
Growing:
Calendula thrives in a pH range of 5.5-7.0 and will grow in standard garden soil. Pinch back the tips of young plants to encourage a fuller plant. While Calendula appreciates occasional fertilization, it grows well without heavy feeding.
Ensure consistent moisture, particularly in dry periods, but be cautious of overhead watering to reduce the risk of mildew. Deadheading spent blooms will enhance the plant's appearance and prevent excessive self-seeding.
Calendula Pests & Diseases
Slugs:
These garden pests are particularly fond of moist environments and can cause significant damage to Calendula and other tender plants.
Keep the garden area clean and free of debris where slugs can hide during the day. Use barriers like copper tape around garden beds or containers, as copper deters slugs.
Hand-picking slugs during the evening with gloves can be effective. Alternatively, slug traps filled with beer or a simple yeast and water mixture can attract and drown slugs. For a non-toxic approach, diatomaceous earth scattered around plants dries out and deters slugs.
Aphids:
These small sap-sucking insects can weaken plants and spread diseases.
Encourage natural predators such as ladybugs, lacewings, and hoverflies by planting diverse flower varieties that attract them.
Rinse aphids off plants with a strong stream of water from a hose. If the problem persists, apply insecticidal soap or neem oil to the undersides of leaves where aphids congregate.
