How to Grow Alyssum

Planting Schedule:
Start your Alyssum flowers indoors 6-8 weeks before the anticipated last frost, preparing for a vibrant spring bloom.

Alternatively, direct sow outdoors when there's still a chance of light frost, ensuring Alyssum gets an early start.

Seed Starting:
Gently scatter the seeds on top of the soil, as they need light to trigger germination. For indoor starts, opt for a sterilized seed starting mix and keep the soil temperature between 12-21°C (55-70°F) under ample lighting.

Remember, covering the seeds is unnecessary. Expect to see sprouts within 5-14 days.

Growing:
Once the frost threat has vanished, transplant the seedlings 20-30cm (8-12 inches) apart in well-draining, loamy soil. This resilient plant withstands dry conditions and thrives in cool and hot climates, making it perfect for xeriscaping.

Regular watering will encourage vigorous growth, but if the summer heat slows the plant down, trim it by half to promote a denser form and a second flowering period. While an annual, Alyssum often self-sows, providing delightful surprises in future seasons.

Alyssum Pests & Diseases

Slugs:
These garden pests are particularly fond of moist environments and can cause significant damage to Alyssum and other tender plants.

Keep the garden area clean and free of debris where slugs can hide during the day. Use barriers like copper tape around garden beds or containers, as copper deters slugs.

Hand-picking slugs during the evening with gloves can be effective. Alternatively, slug traps filled with beer or a simple yeast and water mixture can attract and drown slugs. For a non-toxic approach, diatomaceous earth scattered around plants dries out and deters slugs.

Aphids:
These small sap-sucking insects can weaken plants and spread diseases.

Encourage natural predators such as ladybugs, lacewings, and hoverflies by planting diverse flower varieties that attract them.

Rinse aphids off plants with a strong stream of water from a hose. If the problem persists, apply insecticidal soap or neem oil to the undersides of leaves where aphids congregate.

Snow Cloth Alyssum Seeds

Snow Cloth Alyssum Seeds bring a blanket of pure white blooms to your garden, releasing a rich honey scent that captivates the senses. This low-growing annual forms lush mounds. Scatter these seeds in all unused garden spaces or between rows, and watch Snow Cloth Alyssum seeds weave a tapestry of floral splendour and ecological balance in your garden.

For a dramatic impact, plant Snow Cloth Alyssum seeds in clusters of 8 to 10 uncovered, as light is crucial for germination. Reaching up to 15cm (6 inches) in height, these plants naturally spread, achieving a compact form when basked in full sunlight. After the initial flowering, a simple shear encourages a rejuvenated second bloom, extending the display into early October.

Beyond its beauty, Alyssum plays a vital role in garden health, suppressing weeds and drawing in beneficial insects such as tiny predatory wasps that prey on common pests like caterpillars and aphids.
