Van Beek's Kentucky Blue Grass Sod
Our Grass Sod, sourced locally, is green, thick, and durable.
Available in convienent 2 x 5 ft rolls.
1. Prep the soil where you want to install sod grass
Clear the Area:
Using sod cutters, cut and remove any grass that is in the area. Remove any weeds, rocks, and debris.
Loosen the Topsoil:
Loosening the top 4-6 inches of soil will ensure better root penetration. Use a rototiller and turn over the soil in your area. If you cannot access a rototiller, use a garden garden fork or spade.
Add Quality Soil:
Add a couple of inches of Van Beek's Premium Soil or grade soil to improve drainage and nutrient content. Rake the soil level for a smooth base.
2. Measure & Buy Sod
Measure your Yard:
Calculate the square footage to order enough sod.
Buy Fresh Sod:
Pick up your sod or schedule delivery for installation day. Van Beek's Sod comes in convenient 5ft x 2ft rolls, which cover 10 square feet each or 0.93 square meters.
Tip: Pick up your sod or schedule delivery for installation day for the freshest sod possible.
3. Lay the Sod
Start Straight:
Begin laying the sod along a straight edge like a sidewalk or driveway to ensure even rows.
Stagger the Joints:
Lay the sod in a brick-like pattern, offsetting the joints in each row to prevent seams from lining up.
Tip: Gently pull adjacent pieces together for a seamless look.
Roll it Out (Optional):
Once laid, use a rented roller (available at Van Beek's Landscape Supply) to ensure good contact between the sod and soil.
4. Water the Sod
Water Deeply:
Water the sod immediately after installation, soaking the soil beneath.
Maintain Moisture:
Keep the sod and soil consistently moist for the first two weeks. Water daily, or more frequently in hot, dry weather. Newly laid sod typically requires frequent and consistent watering to establish healthy root growth.
Tip: For the best results, water your sod in the early morning or late evening. Doing this will minimize water evaporation.

5. Maintain the Sod
How long after installing sod can you walk on it?
Limit foot traffic on the newly installed sod for the first 2-3 weeks while it establishes.
Mow Carefully:
Once the sod reaches 3 inches, start mowing. Avoid removing more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time.
6. Fertilize the Sod
Apply a starter fertilizer, like the SS Supreme Turf Starter Fertilizer, to promote healthy root growth and a lush lawn.
With these steps, you now have a solid foundation for how to install sod grass in your yard. Remember, thorough preparation and consistent care are essential for a successful sod installation.
