How to Clean Artificial Grass Before Spring

Once the snow is gone, you may notice leftover leaves, trash and other debris in your artificial grass. To get it looking its best, do the following steps to clean it:

1) Remove the debris

First, we suggest you take a broom or a handle brush and use it to remove the debris. Do not use metal rakes or shovels, as they may damage the grass. If there is a lot of debris, especially leaves, you could consider using a leaf blower to remove it.

2) Rinse the lawn with a garden hose

Once the debris is removed, you should rinse the lawn with the garden hose. There’s no need to use any pressure, this is more about gently washing things away than power washing them off. Pay special attention to areas where pets relieve themselves. While you need to pick up droppings, you should also rinse away urine, ideally weekly.

3) Use a broom to raise the grass

Now that the grass is clean, you may notice that it looks a little flat. Sometimes the weight of snow can press down the grass blades. To fix this, use a broom to raise the grass. Brush the broom against the grass’ natural grain, which will help it stand more upright.

How to Clean Spills in Your Artificial Grass

As you start to spend more time outside, it’s natural that you and your guests may end up spilling things on your artificial grass. Depending on what you’ve spilled in the grass, you may need to take extra steps to remove it, instead of just letting it evaporate.

For example, spilled alcohol can damage artificial turf. So, use a paper towel to absorb the spill. Dab, don’t rub it in. Once you feel like you’ve absorbed most of it, you should still rinse the area with a bit of hose water.

What if you missed a spill and now it’s a stain? You may be able to remove the stain from the grass. Grab a bucket of water and add some dish washing detergent. Soap up the stained area and then rinse it away. You can scrub with a soft toothbrush but take care not to damage the grass with a stiffer brush.
